However the inherent banality of statistics-as-notes can become entertaining, in the hands of a real composer. There’s a good example by Johannes Kreidler, a young German composer whose pieces are a mordant and often entertaining commentary on the effects of new technology and globalisation on music. His piece Charts Music takes things like the Dow Jones index and General Motors share price and turns them into aggressively banal little ditties. You find yourself laughing, slightly uneasily. After the ponderous but ultimately empty seriousness of Crawford’s piece it’s very refreshing.
